The Nigerian Red Cross Society in Edo state has donates unconditional cash to vulnerable people to help cushion the effect of COVID-19.
The communities that benefited from this donations are Auchi, Ekpoma, Oredo (Umegbe).
In an interview with Oghenetejiri Ovwigho-Ugbede who is the Branch Communication Coordinator of the Edo state branch of theNigerian Red Cross Society said:
“in November 2020 the registration for persons affected financially by the pandemic was done. Volunteers were sent out to those Communities and the community leaders cooperated with us to identify the most vulnerable who were worst hit by COVID-19 and we registered a total of 100 per community on a needs assessment based on criteria stipulated by our partners, so we are here for the cash distribution, he said.
It is reported that a total of 300 persons in total benefited from the program with 30,500 naira given to each vulnerable person. The distribution started from Ekpoma to Auchi before ending in Benin City on the 23rd of April 2021.
The program was done with the service of the United Bank of Africa (UBA) as financial partners with every registered person receiving the cash without being compelled to open an account.
