Maize Farmers Laud FG Over Ban on Maize Importation

The maize farmers under the auspices of Maize Association of Nigeria, MAAN laud the Federal Government over the recent ban on maize importation into the country.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital, MAAN National President, Abubakar Funtua explained the benefits the ban will yield for maize farmers, critical stakeholders and the Nigerian economy at large.

The Association said it was targeting about 25 million metric tons of maize production this year, but may suffer about 25 per cent reduction due to lockdown and movement restrictions occasioned by the Corona Virus pandemic.

While commending the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN for its support, the farmers also said they have cultivated about 250,000 hectares of maize this year’s wet season.

The Federal Government of Nigeria recently announced the ban of maize importation in Nigeria. This action, Funtua said will not only encourage farmers to increase productivity but also promote local consumption.
