Expect reduction in cooking gas soon, as there are no plans to hike fuel price – Nigeria Minister of Petroleum.
The price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol will still buy at N162-N165 per litre despite the signing of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) into law, the federal government has said.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday consented to the PIB passed by the National Assembly in July.
The assent gives legal permission to full deregulation which means oil marketers would now have the power to fix prices based on market forces.
But the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva on Tuesday announced fuel price still remained N162 per litre as there would be no sudden enactment of the aspect that covers fuel price deregulation.
“No fuel price increase at least for now. We are starting the enactment of that aspect (deregulation) now. We would do that only when we have put many things in places to ease the effects on Nigerians”, Sylva said.
The minister acknowledged that full deregulation would bring hardship and hardships for Nigerians, but he said “that is the best thing to do.”
He said the Governors’ Forum was agitating for full deregulation because they knew that was the only way they could get more allocations for capital projects.
On 3% host communities fund in the PIA, Sylva said giving more than 3% would scare away investors adding that the National Assembly and other stakeholders settled for that to attract investments.
“Everything was weighed before 3% was settled on. It is in our collective interest. If we put the fund at 10%, the oil companies will only add it to their operational cost and that consequence would come back to the country.”
Out of $50 billion oil and gas investments that came to Africa last year, he said only $3bn came to Nigeria because foreign investors weren’t so sure of the investment climate.
On the hike in prices of cooking gas, Sylva said the federal government would meet with gas suppliers to know why the increase and find ways to bring the prices down.

Igbo are in Charge of Economy in Nigeria – President Buhari
President Buhari has stated that the Igbo are in charge of economy in Nigeria, this was made known via his verified Facebook page while thanking Imo state for their warm reception they gave him during his commissioning visit.
In his words he wrote: I thank the Government and people of Imo State for the very warm reception accorded me during my visit yesterday. It was a pleasure to visit Imo State and to be hosted by Governor Hope Uzodimma.
I was pleased to see and commission his impactful infrastructure projects, and to note that he is giving infrastructure the same kind of priority that we are giving it at the Federal level.
I firmly believe that when you get infrastructure right, Nigerians will mind their own businesses. And the Igbos will especially benefit from this ongoing infrastructure revolution, because, as a group, they are truly the most enterprising.
There is no town you will visit in Nigeria without seeing the Igbos being in-charge of economic activities. The evidence is there for everyone to see, that Igbos are in charge of Nigeria’s economy.
It is therefore unthinkable for me that any Igbo man would consider himself not to be a part of Nigeria.
Let me again say that I was very pleased with what I saw in Imo State, and I would like to assure that I will support Imo State and the entire region within the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Federal Government will complete all ongoing key projects in the South East, including the 2nd Niger Bridge, and other major highways, as well as the railway lines and routes linking the region with other parts of the country.
This have however spark several reactions on social media with some in support of some of his words while others are against it.
