Members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Edo State Branch led by the Branch Chairman Mr Festus Alenkhe today joined the state government in a sanitation exercise aimed at kick-starting a neater Edo state initiative. The flag off which had a good turnout from different groups was held on the museum ground at the King Square in Benin.
On its part, the Red Cross through the Branch Chairman presented some cleaning items including brooms, rakes and wheelbarrows. Speaking, Mr Alenkhe told the Commissioner for Youth and Special Duties (who received on behalf of government) that the Red Cross as an organisation supports efforts well intended for the communities in line with its mandate. He said that the branch has communicated it’s divisions at local government level to support the initiative.
The Commissioner, Hon. Damian Lawani, flanked by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication strategy, while accepting the donation, thanked the Red Cross for supporting the idea. He further led the members of the Red Cross as well as other groups to the Governor, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and his deputy Comr. Philip Shaibu on their arrival for the clean up exercise which took them through the King’s square and Lagos street area.
In a conversation with our correspondent, the Branch Communication Coordinator Mr Oghenetejiri Ovwigho-Ugbede who spoke on behalf of the Branch Secretary said that the Nigerian Red Cross Society has a mandate to help alleviate human suffering and an unhealthy environment will lead to health issues this preventing it is the wiser course.
